Understanding Bonds

We like to say bonds and capital overrides are for buildings and buses. Maintenance & Operations overrides are for teacher pay (salaries/benefits). Of course it's not that simple, but it's a good starting point as voters begin grappling with the complexities of school funding.


What is a Bond Election?

Bonds, more specifically referred to as Class B Bonds, are used by school districts to fund construction projects. These projects can fund new construction or renovation of older structures. Bond dollars cannot be used to fund salaries or purchase supplies.


Why is a Bond Election needed?

While the 1998 Students FIRST legislation transferred the primary responsibility for funding construction, maintenance and repair of schools to the State of Arizona. However, the State is no longer funding the formulas established by the legislation.
